The Doubting Christian
There are degrees of unbelief and, sooner or later, even the most
ardent Christian feels its icy touch. The encounter can be a shock and could
lead to despair. But it helps to understand that faith, like the knowledge on
which it rests, is never complete.
Only Christ received without measure the
holy spirit and its comforting certainty. Even so, on the Cross He cried out in
anguish to God, ‘why have you forsaken me?’ But His words soon after
radiated the holy assurance that all was well. ‘It is finished’, He said,
completing the work of sacrifice.
For the rest of us it is necessary to persist
through the everyday lapses and trust our Heavenly Father to shore up our
frequently fragile faith. To wait for the answer to whatever perplexes us. To
have faith in faith itself. (AP)
